SDAPA News and Announcements

SDAPA Density Symposium: "Making Density Work" - October 10, 2008 - Higher densities are an important tool for smart growth. But, as every planner knows, resident's fears of traffic gridlock, parking meltdown and destruction of community character can derail or compromise even modest plans and projects. Still, with high gas prices and changing attitudes towards urban living, the attractiveness of denser urban environments is on the rise. Is density our destiny? How can planners harness density to improve transit, enhance livability and create better places? Join us for a stimulating, full-day symposium as we explore the subject of density as it relates to a variety of urban issues, including city form, placemaking, development economics, transportation, design, infrastructure, gentrification and more. Guest speakers include: Form-Based Code Institute Founding President, Peter Katz; Great Cities Alliance co-founder Steve Belmont, AIA author of the book, Cities in Full: Recognizing and Realizing the Great Potential of Urban America; and a distinguished panel of planning experts and practitioners. Six CM credits pending.

WalkSanDiego Brown Bag Forum: "Do Pedestrians Exist If We Don't Count Them?" - September 17, 2008 - Land use and roadway projects are routinely scrutinized for their traffic impacts, but only on motor vehicle traffic. Until now, counting walkers and bicyclists hasn't been required, and is pretty tricky to do. California's "Blueprint for Bicycling and Walking" aims to increase these modes by 50%. But 50% of what? And, if we count them, can we predict where they'll show up? Dr. Sherry Ryan will describe the preliminary results from a fascinating Caltrans-funded study designed to answer these questions and more.
