UCSD Extension Course: Planning Policies for Sustainable Development - April 9, 2009 - Continued rapid urban development in California puts ever greater strains on our natural environment. In response, conventional methods of urban planning, development regulation and environmental review are being supplemented by new approaches that focus on large-scale natural systems rather than jurisdictional boundaries or individual projects. These approaches are applied in the areas of habitat conservation, storm water management, water supply, and climate change. Explore the evolving legal and regulatory framework in which natural systems planning takes place in California, and review successful policy approaches taken in localities across the State to address these issues. Discussion will include habitat conservation plans, integrated water management plans, regional and local climate action plans, and "cap and trade" policies. Instructor: Robert A. Leiter, FAICP, Director of Land Use and Transportation Planning, SANDAG
