Compass Blueprint Awards: Call for Nominations - March 12, 2010 - The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is now accepting nominations for its Fourth Annual Compass Blueprint Recognition Awards.

The Compass Blueprint Recognition Awards are presented annually in recognition of projects that demonstrate excellence and achievement in the four key elements of Compass Blueprint planning: Livability, Mobility, Prosperity and Sustainability.

Last year's prestigious President's Excellence Award went to the City of Los Angeles and their South Collection project: Elleven, Luma, and Evo. The South Collection was a prime example of how a community can implement Compass Blueprint principles by targeting future growth into key activity centers and transportation corridors, and encourage land use and growth patterns that complement the region's transportation investments. Other winners were the City of Santa Monica for the 2008-2014 Santa Monica Housing Element project, the San Bernardino Associated Governments for the Visionary Planning for Mobility project, and the City of Long Beach for their Courtyard Lofts project.

This year's Compass Blueprint Recognition Awards Program will be held May 5th 2010 in conjunction with the SCAG Regional Conference & General Assembly at the La Quinta Resort in La Quinta. This will be an excellent opportunity to showcase your innovative project at a large regional event. Please note that the San Diego Section of APA includes Imperial County which is within the SCAG region.

The deadline for nomination submission is: Friday, March 12, 2010 at 2:00pm. The application packet and information on past years' award winners is available from the SCAG website. For questions, contact Christopher Tzeng at (213) 236-1913 or tzeng at scag.ca.gov

NAVFAC Symposium - March 2, 2010 - Our membership has a great opportunity to learn about the many NAVFAC opportunities for the planning and engineering professions. ACEC, in association with SAME, is holding a NAVFAC Symposium. It is being held March 2 at the Manchester Hyatt.

All NAVFAC Business Line leaders will be discussing their specific opportunities. Two of those lines are Asset Management and Environmental, which should be of particular interest to APA members. There will also be a panel discussion on LEED certification of Navy and Marine Corps projects (an architect, builder, NAVFAC Rep and USGBC).

Captain Keith Hamilton, Commanding Officer of NAVFAC Southwest, will be the lunchtime keynote speaker and the afternoon will feature breakout sessions that further explain opportunities for large and small businesses, as well as sessions on alternative energy and Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection design.

Please see brochure for the event which explains registration, sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities.
